Hey all,

It’s been four years since I released my last mix.

I’ve moved coasts twice, from NC to SF and from SF to NYC. It feels good to be back on the East coast, closer to home, and I’m thrilled to share music with you again this year.

In 2015, I put together a whole album—art and everything!—but I never released it. Thwarted by perfectionism, I guess. “Next year,” I thought.

November 2016, I remember sitting on a park bench the day after the election, gazing at the patterns of the waves in the San Francisco Bay. The feelings of “joy”, of “togetherness”, of everything that I try to embody in these compilations… those felt impossibly distant. And they did in 2017. They still do, often.

What I’m learning is that joyfulness requires reslience. That even when everything around us is crumbling—especially when everything is crumbling—we have to push forward, whether pushing forward looks like running for office or sharing music or simply hugging a friend. Your happiness is worth more than anyone who would try to steal it from you.

This mix veers toward melancholy more than any year before: there’s Julie Andrews’ timeless, wholesome charm, the haunting, otherworldly vocals of Ólafur Arnalds and Chanticleer, and the arrow-to-the-heart lyrics of Tom Rosenthal in “The Only Time I’m Home”.

Wistfulness is puncuated by spikes of genuine joy: Kris Kringle driving a Chevrolet down South; bluegrass-meets-Bach; 8-bit Christmas trees; and one simple, straightforwrd wish.
